Artist Ben Elliot and 3D printing specialists Nagami have unveiled the Xchair, a lounge chair that marries ergonomics with metaverse aesthetics. This piece is part of Elliot’s larger Metaone project, exhibited at Gallery Esther Schipper in Berlin. The project is an exploration of extended reality (XR), offering an immersive experience that includes virtual reality (VR), a lounge chair, a curtain artwork, and printed images derived from the VR environment.
The Xchair stands out for its design, which is both functional and futuristic. Crafted using recycled PETG, it serves as a versatile centerpiece in any modern space. The chair’s design aligns with the needs of contemporary life, supporting various activities from work to relaxation, in an age increasingly dominated by digital tools and extended realities. Its ergonomic, translucent, and curvaceous form is reminiscent of layers forming an L-shape, ensuring dynamic and responsive seating. The design’s fluidity and elasticity allow for continual adjustments, reflecting the versatile nature of human interaction with their environment.
Olivier Zeitoun, an art curator, notes that the Xchair represents a nexus between solidity and fluidity, evoking concepts of liquefaction, data immersion, and future lifestyles. It not only provides physical comfort but also stands as a symbol of the ever-evolving interplay between the digital and physical realms. The chair’s texture and form embody a sensual, adaptive surface, akin to skin or shells, highlighting the intersection of art, design, and technology in shaping future living spaces.
