Elegoo’s New FDM Machine Allows Large Printing On A Budget

Elegoo has initiated a Kickstarter for the OrangeStorm Giga, a 3D printer with unusually large build volume. The OrangeStorm Giga, Elegoo’s recent entrant into the 3D printing market, offers a build volume of 800 x 800 x 1000 mm, dwarfing standard printers that max out at 250 mm³ and even surpassing those deemed large at 400-500 mm per dimension. The Kickstarter campaign rapidly surpassed its $100,000 goal, currently standing over $2 million, reflecting considerable market interest from those wishing to print big, on the cheap.

This printer’s scale allows for printing objects as large as a small child (or even a portly one) or multiple items simultaneously, with options for adding up to three extra nozzles. It supports Klipper firmware and operates on a RK3328 quad-core processor, with a base speed of 1.5 GHz and printing speeds up to 300 mm/s, though 150 mm/s is recommended for best performance.

The design includes a heated bed, chrome zirconium copper nozzles, and a 60-Watt heating pad capable of reaching 300°C. Additionally, it features a filament spool holder and a portable 7-inch touchscreen for operational control.

Early backers receive a 50% discount, pricing the printer at $1,250, with subsequent tiers offering 40% off. The campaign aims to conclude by January 3rd, 2024. Elegoo’s venture into large-scale 3D printing may influence future market trends, with potential implications for efficiency in large-object manufacturing and multi-material printing capabilities.
