3D Printed Innovation Merges with Traditional Korean Furniture

Kim Min Hyuk’s Saero series redefines traditional Korean furniture, seamlessly blending cultural heritage with modern design principles. Departing from conventional norms, Saero transcends its utilitarian roots to become a sleek centerpiece, reminiscent of historic orientalist paintings.

In the Saero series, aluminum profiles take center stage, lending their lightweight yet robust characteristics to the furniture. Utilized predominantly in automation machinery (and 3D printers), these profiles find a new purpose as they elegantly shape the sculptural partitions and tables of Saero. Notably, the cross-sectional patterns formed during extrusion remarkably mirror traditional Korean motifs, infusing the pieces with a timeless aesthetic.

The inventive use of contemporary materials, including bioplastic and 3D printing, breathes new life into age-old designs. The aluminum profiles, equipped with a rail, seamlessly integrate with 3D printed parts adorned with oriental paintings. This innovative approach not only ensures a flawless fit but also transforms the assembly process into a captivating three-dimensional tableau.

The Saero collection represents a bold departure from the conventional byeongpung, reimagining its role from a mere wind-blocking screen to a stylish, historically inspired centerpiece. Kim Min Hyuk’s reinterpretation of culture and heritage through 3D printed aluminum opens new possibilities for the intersection of tradition and innovation in furniture design.
